ABSTRACT

In this research, by examining the records from Uigwe(儀軌), the names of fifty nine engravers mobilized for the stone carving of royal tombs during the reign of King Yeongjo were examined. While more than a hundred engravers were mobilized for nine rounds of national construction works, only the names of thirty nine were identified. However, it is assumed that since each engraver could have been mobilized several times for those construction works, only few remained unknown. Among those identified engravers, twenty did not actually participate in working because of diseases or unknown whereabouts. Few were exempt from mobilization because they were either yangban(兩班) or officials. Some engravers who belonged to Gyseogwan(校書館) participated in carving not only stones but also jade and bamboos. It is confirmed that those engravers were skilled masters in engraving various kinds of materials, including jade, bamboo, stones as well as woodblocks.
