ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to examine the process of compiling Jungryemun(中禮文) whose original title is Ch'ŏ'njimyŏngyangsuryukchae'ŭichanyo (「天地冥陽水陸齋儀纂要」). Jungryemun is the manual of Shuilu, that is, Buddhistic ritual for delivering the spirits of all creatures of land and water. In this research, some manuals of Buddhistic rituals which influenced the compilation of Jungryemun were investigated. The result shows that Tiandi mingyang shuilu yiwen written by Yang E(楊諤) in the Northern Song Dynasty was later summed up and edited by Zikui(仔夔) as Tiandi mingyang shuilu yiwen in one hundred chapters. And under the influence of this manual of Chinese rituals, Jungryemun was later compiled by Jugam, a Buddhist monk in the Goryeo Period. Among many manuals of Shuilu, Jungryemun was so detailed and well organized that it was frequently published and had much influence on the publication of manuals of Shuilu in the later period.
