AB - This research deals with the experiments and restoration of the typesettings of Imjin-Ja, the fifth movable types cast in the shape of Gabin-Ja, and Jeongyu-Ja, the sixth movable types cast in the shape of Gabin-Ja. It focused on the limitation that the process of casting and finishing metal movable types in pieces could inevitably cause slight variances in heights of those types, and therefore, tried to figure out how to make these types in various heights level for typesetting. Major findings are as follows: First, in typesetting Imjin-Ja, the surface of a typeset was made level by filling papers in the spaces at the bottom of types in lower heights, based on the records of Ilseongnok, etc. Second, it was also found that in typesetting Jeongyu-Ja, the types were perfectly set without any gap by using various materials, including papers, and pieces of wood and bamboo, in order to fill the spaces between types and make their heights level, and therefore the books were beautifully printed with those types.
