A Comprehensive Study on Honam Jeoluirog

ABSTRACT

This study examines comprehensively the background, place and date of publication, organization, and contents of Honam Jeoluirog(湖南節義錄) compiled by Go Jeongheon(高廷憲) in 1799. It is revealed that Honam Jeoluirog recorded the activities of civilian armies which rose in the cause of justice in the Honam Province during five wars and rebellions, that is, Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, Chinese Invasions of Korea in 1627 and 1636, the rebellion of Yi Gwal, and the rebellion of Yi Injwa, and was first published at Songgwang-sa in Sunchoen in 1799. It was confirmed that all the remaining editions of Honam Jeoluirog of 5 books in 5 volumes are the same editions with only a slight difference in the number of ‘Prefaces(序文)’ included, and the edition held at the National Library of Korea with the difference in about 130 places of original texts was the revised and supplemented print of the first edition. In Honam Jeoluirog, recorded are a total of 1,460 persons killed during these wars and rebellions, of which 374 persons died in defense of their chastity and 1,086 fought for the cause of justice. And it was revealed that the areas with the most deceased are Younggwang, Jangheung, Boseong, Naju, and Namwon in order of the number of the deceased.
