AB - 『Sohak(小學)』 , the book for teaching ethics to children, compiled by Ju Hui(朱熹) and Riu Cheongji(劉淸之) in 1187, was imported during the late Goreo Dynasty(高麗) and widely distributed and taught in the Joseon Dynasty(朝鮮). This study intends to outline the entire editions of Korean annotations of Sohak published in the Joseon Dynasty, and examine the trend of publishing those Korean annotations by analyzing the periods and places of their publication and systems.
Five titles of the Korean annotations of Sohak were included in Chaekpanmokrok(冊板目錄), and woodblocks of these books were located in 29 places in the country. The presently-existing editions were 4 titles, including 『Beonyeok Sohak(飜譯小學)』, 『Sohak Eonhae(小學諺解)』, 『Sohak Gyubeom(小學閨範)』, and 『Sohak Jegajipju(小學諸家集註)』 and a total of 15 titles were examined. The earliest edition was 『Beonyeok Sohak』 published in the 16 century.
Of the currently existing editions, two titles were prints with metal movable types and 13 titles were woodblock prints. An analysis of the places of publication shows that some were printed with movable types by Gyoseogwan(校書館), etc. and local publications were mostly the reproductions of movable type prints distributed by the central government.
According to the existing editions, Sohak was published in such places as Yeongju(瀛州) and Hamyeong(咸營). Also, many private bookstores, including Singuseorim(新舊書林), Hoidongseoguan(滙東書館), Gwangdongseoguk(光東書局), etc., printed various woodblock editions of Sohak by reproducing woodblocks from metal movable type prints previously published or changing the number of lines and letters from the original prints.
