ABSTRACT

This research analyzes the background of publication of Nammyong Songjungdo- ga. Major findings are as follows:1) Nammyong Songjungdo-ga is the book about the nature of spiritual awakening, which Nammyong Hwasang Bopjon added the eulogy to each phrase of 'Jungdo-ga' by Youngga Daesa. The publication of this book became the basis of establishing the Jogye Order in Buddhism during the mid-Goryeo Period. 2) In the early 13th century, the formation of the Susonsa and Baengnyonsa, which could be considered the unparalleled change in the community of Buddhism, became matured in the Goryeo society. During that period the 7-storied wooden stupa of Hwangnyongsa Temple in Gyeongju was set on fire by Mongolian soldiers in 1238, and Nammyong Songjungdo-ga was printed from woodblocks in the very next year. 3) In the 13th century, the military government of Choe Yi supported both materially and spiritually the Jogye Order, that is, Susonsa. Their support for the Jogye Order was motivated by their intention to entice the Jogye Order to actively support and cooperate with them. 4) It seems that the military government of Choe Yi published Nammyong Songjungdo-ga strongly needed by the Jogye Order in order to seek more active support and cooperation from the Jogye Order with his government. In addition it is confirmed that Nammyong Songjungdo-ga was published by Choe Yi’s government, because they tried to establish the ideological foundation of fighting against Mongolian invaders with the help of the Jogye Order, and motivate the followers of the Jogye Order to participate in resisting Mongol and engraving the second edition of Tripitaka.
