ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate the historical facts and characteristics of the engravers mobilized to work for the royal funeral, the publication of a royal diary, and the movement of a royal tomb, related with King Hyojong(孝宗), by examining the record of Uigwe. As a result of the research, the following facts and characteristics have been clarified: Since it was not easy to recruit a lot of engravers in the capital city to finish a royal project in a short period of time, many engravers and engraving monks were also called from countryside and buddhist temples. Many of them were very skilled at engraving block letters, on both stones and woods, and usually worked together as a team at Dogam(都監), a temporary government office, or buddhist temples. Therefore, in order to identify the engravers, it is more appropriate to examine other engravers who worked together at the same time, than to examine their individual work area or period. During this period some famous engravers, including Yi Suil(李秀一) brothers, Song Deuk(宋得), Hong Silhyeon(洪實賢), Kim Aerip(金愛立), Beopgwan(法寬), and Haksun(學淳) etc. could be identified.
