ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate King Myeong-jong's reading history in the Gyeongyeon(經筵) of the Joseon Dynasty. From the records of 22 years during his reign in the Sillok(Royal Chronicles of the Joseon Period) this study identified what and how often he had read with the officers of the Gyeongyon, his reading behavior, and the obstacles against his reading environment. Major findings are as follows: During 22 years of his reign, King Myeong-jong read only 9 titles, that is, Sohag(小學), Hyogyeong(孝經), Daehag(大學), Noneo(論語), Maengja(孟子), Jungyong (中庸), and Daehagyeonui(大學衍義), Guensarok(近思錄), and Gangmok(綱目). He participated 814 times in the Jogang(morning lectures. 朝講), 419 times in the Jugang (day lectures. 晝講), and 723 times in the Seoggang(evening lectures. 夕講). It is demonstrated that he disliked reading. Moreover the officers of the Gyeongyon were less eager than in the lectures for the previous kings, and King Myeonjg-jong himself could hardly read due to his physical conditions, and internal and external problems of the country.
