An Analysis of the Division “Korean Music [Korean Traditional Music] & Orient Traditional Music” in the 5th Edition of Korean Decimal Classification and Relative Index

ABSTRACT

This paper analyzes the articles of “Korean Music [Korean Traditional Music] & Oriental Traditional Music” as revised in the 5th Edition of the Korean Decimal Classification(KDC), and suggests ideas for their improvement. It also examines the development of Korean music from the period of the Three Kingdoms to the present, while looking into the classification system attempted in the field of Korean traditional music. The paper compares and analyzes the following classification systems of Korean music in Korean libraries: the KDC, which the standard classification system ; the Dewey Decimal Classification ; the classification of Korean traditional music of the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, which is the specialized classification system for Korean music ; the KBS musical data classified table ; and the classification system of the National Gug-ak Center’s traditional arts archive. The articles of the KDC 5th Edition’s “Korean Music [Korean Traditional Music] & Oriental Traditional Music” are also examined in detail, being divided into the domains of theory of Korean traditional music, Korean musical compositions, Korean musical instruments, and Oriental traditional music. The problems in “Korean Music [Korean Traditional Music] & Oriental Traditional Music” in the 5th edition of the KDC are categorized and discussed in the following: the subdivision and revision of Chongak, the notes deletion and subdivision of Buddhist music, the notes deletion and subdivision of shamanistic music, the addition of Christian music, and the subdivision of traditional Oriental music. This paper provides ideas for improvements for the 6th Edition of the KDC.
