ABSTRACT

This research is an attempt to cast and restore Hangul types used for printing ‘Worin Chongangjigok’ which King Sejong ordered to cast as the first Hangul types since the invention of Hangul. Major findings are as follows:First, Hangul types are thick and strong square-shaped copper types in the size of 1.5x1.5cm. There seems to be a pattern that metal movable types get smaller than their father wooden types, when they are cast. It is because, when metal movable types are cast and cooled down, copper is contracted in the rate of 15/1,000. Especially a length of movable types is reduced more than their width. Second, since the bottoms of the First Cast Gabinja are assumed to be flat, the bottoms of these types cast in this experiment are also made flat. Third, in the layout of ‘Worin Chongangjigok’, four sides of each page are surrounded by a single line, and its center of folded leaves contains a shape of fish tales directed inward within a large black square. Lines in a typeset are hidden and therefore invisible from printed pages. Side marks seem to be set separately from large Hangul fonts. In this experiment, the original typesets of printed pages of ‘Worin Chongangjigok’ were successfully restored in twelve steps.
