ABSTRACT

Sooryuk moocha pyungdeung jaeui chwalyo(水陸無遮平等齋儀撮要), a Buddhist ritual manual, was first published in 1470 with the donation from the royal family. Since then many editions printed till the early 18th century remain until today. This study tried to figure out the systematic branch of its editions, and analyze the pattern of publishing by period and region, engravers, and engraved pictures by examining various editions of Sooryuk moocha pyungdeung jaeui chwalyo(水陸無遮平等齋儀撮要). The text of Sooryuk moocha pyungdeung jaeui chwalyo(水陸無遮平等齋儀撮要) was compiled in either 37 parts or 35 parts, and there are nine branches of editions. Among them, the largest group was confirmed to belong to Moonsoo-temple edition(1533). Furthermore the editions published between the 16th to the 17th century consisted of about 85% of all the editions. Also approximately 60% of the editions were published in Gyeongsang(慶尙) and Jeolla(全羅) provinces. In the text of the book, there are 63 buddhist hand-shaped pictures, called Sooindo(手印圖). While their overall features are the same, the detailed expressions show minute differences.
