ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to analyzes on the Taehak-hyanggwancheong- soji-byeong-sicheop. The major findings are as follows:(1) Seokjeon is a memorial service for the old saints and sages including Confucius in a Confucian shrine, Munmyo. There were no cases that a king directly held Seokjeon except for Seongjong in 1475(Seongjong 6) and Heonjong in 1661(Heongjo 2) before the reign of King Yeongjo. (2) The reasons that the King Yeongjo directly conducted Seokjeon in 1740 (Yeongjo 16) were for honoring previous Seokjeon which Seongjong held in 1480 (Seongjong 11) and encouraging people to study hard. It can be inferred about academic inclination and political, ideological disposition of the King Yeongjo. (3) Taehak-hyanggwancheong-soji-byeong-sicheop contains 17 poems. One is that the King Yeongjo composed when he conducted Seokjeon in 1740(Yeongjo 16), and the others are that the sixteen retainers wrote to reply to their king’s poem and presented the poems to him. (4) The poems in Taehak-hyanggwancheong-soji-byeong-sicheop congratulated Seokjeon, the king conducted, and also praised its influences such as guiding customs, training and selecting talented people, and spreading Confucianism out. (5) Only the King Yeongjo’s poem of Taehak-hyanggwancheong-soji-byeong- sicheop is contained in the Annals of the King Yeongjo, and other sixteen poems the retainers composed are not recorded in any other literatures. Therefore, Taehak- hyanggwancheong-soji-byeong-sicheop can be classified as rare and precious materials, so it seems worth being designated and preserved as a local cultural property.
