A Study on the Woodblocks of Beopwonjurim in Koryeo Eighty Thousands Tripitaka

This paper aims to study Beopwonjurim(K.1406)’s 100 volumes and 1,696 woodblocks by proceeding in the following order: the Beopwonjurim’s content and layout, its woodblocks and scale, and the correction and woodblock characteristics in the 82nd volume of Beopwonjurim’s first and second editions. Beopwonjurim is a Buddhist encyclopedia comprising of 100 volumes, 100 parts and 668 sections edited by Dosae around the 7th century. Its classification system consists of heaven and earth, kings, the public figure system, others 1, things, others 2. The first carving of Beopwonjurim was issued in Ingyeonwon in the first year of Hampyeong(998) after Great Master Unseung’s correction. In Goryeo, when the carving of the Koryeo First Tripitaka was concluded in the 4th year of Seonjong’s reign(1087) and the year after Uicheon returned, he proposed that the Beopwonjurim be published the year after that. And so the Song Dynasty’s carving was reprinted and engraved. At present, the 82nd volume remain in their entirety. 100 volumes, 1696 blocks and 3392 sides(3322 sides were actually engraved) of the second carving were done during the 31st year of Gojong’s reign(1244) by 602 engravers in Daejangdogam and Bunsadogam. A comparison of the first Tripitaka (Model A) and the second Tripitaka (Model B) of Beopwonjurim’s 82nd volume leads to the conclusion that the second version has the first model as a basis. The second edition faithfully follows the model of the first while adding a little proofreading. Comparing the 14 woodblocks of the first model and the second model, it can be concluded overall that the first edition is Song Bon’s reprinting. The broad and large letters and powerful strokes in the first model give the impression of force; however, the largeness of the letters lacks an orderly impression. The second model recarved the first model as a basis. The carving is unskilled; and the characteristics of the letters from the first model are hardly shown. Additionally their overall appearance is diminutive and crude.

A Study on Bunsadaejangdogam Colophons of the Wood Tablet of Tripitaka Koreana

The study is about examining and inquiring into 65 Bunsadaejangdogam colophons that are carved into in the kind of 78 wood tablets of the kyungjeons with Bunsadaejangdogam colophones, not the gyungjeons printed in the paper. As a result, it is showed that the mixed state of Daejangdogam and Bunsadaejangdogam and the condition of supplementary wood cuttings presented in Bunsadaejangdogam colophons are analyzed as below. ① Daejangdogam colophons are only partially Bunsadogam colophons that all have supplementary wood cuttings with the mixed Daejangdogam and Bunsadogam colophons. ② Daejangdogam colophons are only part of Daejangdogam colophons that have the mixed Daejangdogam and Bunsadogam colophons. ③ There are no supplementary wood cuttings in the Bunsadogam colophons mixed with Daejangdogam and Bunsadogam colophons. ④ All the Bunsadogam colophons with the mixed Daejangdogam and Bunsadogam colophons are newly transcribed and wood cut. ⑤ Part of Bunsadogam colophons with the mixed Daejangdogam and Bunsadogam colophons are supplemented and wood cut. ⑥ There is not having supplementary wood cuttings, but having Bunsadogam colophons in the Daejangdogam colophons. ⑦ The whole contents of the colophons being made up of Bunsadogam colophons are newly transcribed and wood cut. ⑧ There are supplementary wood cuttings in the Daejangdogam colophons being made up of Bunsadogam colophons. ⑨ There are supplementary wood cuttings in only part of the Daejangdogam colophons contents being made up of the Bunsadogam colophons. ⑩ The only part of the colophons contents are supplemented and wood cut in the Daejangdogam colophons. Above all, it is expected that the real condition of the supplementary wood cuttings in the Bunsadaejangdogam colophons examined in the study is the valuable guide in understanding the relation of Daejangdogam and Bunsadaejangdogam.

Consideration on Seokjuchip - A Collection of Kwon Phil's Works -

Kwon Phil(1569-1612, his pen name is Seokju) was a prominent poet in the mid Chosun Dynasty when Chinese literature had florished, and his poetry has been estimated to show a cross section of Chinese literature in the Chosun Dynasty. Seokjuchip, the collection of Kwon Phil's works, was published several times, thanks to his literary standing. Seokjuchip was composed of original collection, extra collection and appendix, and also its manuscript has been descended up to this day. The compiling way of Seokjuchip has been a role model of compiling a collection of works and given an important influence to the later writer, which is the most important significance of Seokjuchip. In 1632(the reign of King Injo, Chosun Dynasty, 10years), Seokjuchip was published first 20 years after Kwon Phil had been dead. Kwon Phil gave his manuscript of poetry to Shim Kiwon in the face of his death. Shim Kiwon and Oh Suk arranged the compilation of his manuscript, and Lee Chik edited them after selecting poems among many manuscripts. Shim Kiwon discussed the seal of a collection with Hong Bo, at last the first issue of Seokjuchip was put out in Jeonju where Hong Bo had been serving as buyun of Jeonju. The second issue of Seokjuchip was published in 1674. Song Siyul chose about 100 poems which were not put out in the first issue and added them to the first issue of Seokjuchip and edited a collection of works, in the form of extract collection. At last the second issue of Seokjuchip was published in 1674(the reign of King Hyunjong, Chosun Dynasty, 15years). The third issue of Seokjuchip was published in Jeonju in 1742(the reign of King Youngjo, Chosun Dynasty, 18years) by Kwon Chuk, Kwon Phil's descendant. There were not any differences of the contents and the compilation between the second and the third issue of Seokjuchip. Therefore we can guess that the third issue may have been published to increase the quantity of books.

Bibliographic Study on Volume 33 of Gaewun-sa Jin Version Avatamska Sutra

This paper studied the Volume 33 of Jin version Avatamska Sutra kept in Gaewun-sa Temple from bibliographic viewpoint and found out following facts. The bibliographic characteristics of Gaewun-sa edition Jin version Avatamska Sutra Volume 33 are as following. The binding is in scroll form and it consists of 19 chapters. Each chapter has 26 lines, except the book-beginning writing and the page with book-ending writing. This is different from the Goryeo editions, which have 24 lines. The Gaewun-sa Edition book-beginning writing has the sutra titles and chapter titles in the same line. Goryeo editions published after 10th century do not have this kind of format. The characters in Gaewun-sa Edition are in manuscript style in general. Nine characters, that had changed into square style in later age, had been chosen from the Gaewun-sa Edition and they had been compared with the characters in the Dunhuang manuscript. The result suggested that they are same with the manuscripts published in the ages of Shilla, Sui and Tang. The content of Gaewun-sa Edition sutra had been examined. It showed substantial difference from the Zhonghua edition Tripitaka. However, there was no significant difference from the Goryeo Second-engraving editions, which had accommodated the temple-published editions, and the Daisho New Edition Tripitaka, which had been compiled based on the Goryeo Second-engraving editions. Therefore, it is believed that Gaewun-sa Edition is in the same series with Goryeo Second-engraving editions and the Daisho New Edition Tripitaka. Based on above results, it is believed that the Gaewun-sa Edition had been published in Korea during 9th to 10th century. It is possibility to assume that Gaewun-sa Edition is the earliest edition among the 17-character temple-published editions, which became the original of Goryeo Second-engraving editions later.

Dong-do-il-sa, an Envoy Journal Written by Park Sang-Sik, a Village Clerk of the Second Susinsa in 1880

Park Sang-Sik(朴祥植), who was from Dongnae(東萊) and accompanied the second Susinsa in 1880 as a village clerk, left an envoy journal named “Dong-do-il-sa(東渡日史).” This book had been owned by his descendant, and currently has been in the possession of the Busan Museum. This study analyzed the “Dong-do-il-sa” based on the author, sojourn, value as historical record and others. Busan was the center of the exchange history between Korea and Japan in Jeseon Period. Since the seventeenth century, twelve times of Tongsinsa(通信使) and four times of Joseon Susinsa were dispatched to Japan. Many people in Busan area participated in these two envoys. However, Byeon Tak(卞琢) as a member of Tongsinsa in 1763 and Park Sang-Sik as a member of Susinsa in 1880 were the only people who left envoy journals. Most of envoy journals were left by government bureaucrats. It is quite rare for people from provincial cities such as Busan to leave an envoy journal. He was born to a representative village official family in Dongnae area. It is considered he was selected as a village clerk because of his career that he served in a variety of high-ranking village officials. “Dong-do-il-sa” is the unique manuscript consisting of one book. The book is incomplete with several pages torn. The book consists of three parts. It consists of three parts: The first part is his envoy journal, the second part is questions and answers between Kim Hong-Jip(金弘集), the Joseon chief envoy, and bureaucrats of Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the third part is the official document related to Susinsa. In his journal, he recorded details of Japanese and Manchu people he met, places he visited, and urban landscape he viewed. In particular, it shows his perceptions of modern transport facilities and culture such as military installations, paper currency production, rail transport and steamboat. This book has a great historical value as a first-rate text in the study of Susinsa. It is an invaluable document that shows views and perceptions of the modern culture and landscape of Japan from the perspectives of not government bureaucrat but local official. His father, Park Ju-Yeon 박주연(朴周演), left a collection named “Yun-dae-jip(倫臺集).” It is greatly significant for father and son to left works for two generations in building local knowledge in Busan area.
