ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to examine the factors leading to the lower level of Korean book-reading rate, while searching for the strategies needed for activating book-reading environment. Data were collected from the in-depth interviews implemented toward expertise groups. The analysis showed several critical factors related with the lower level of Korean book-reading rate. They included such factors as the shortage of leasure time, the absence of book-reading habits, the dominance of competing media, the lack of qualified reading contents, and the neglect of parents and teachers. The findings suggested that the never-ending national book-reading campaign, especially hosted by local and central government, publishing organizations, libraries, teachers and parents, and media journals, would be a stepping stone for activating book-reading environment. Several expertises argued that the national book-reading campaign would be more productive when it could be supported by the expansion of the number of libraries and their infra-structures, the repeated book advertisements and PR's through major news media, and the cultivation of book-reading habits.
