ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to analyze on the Samgongsin-hoemaengrok(「三功臣會盟錄」) of Gaegukgongsin, Jeongsagongsin and Jwamyeonggongsin in early Joseon Dynasty. The major findings are as follows:(1) Samgongsin-hoemaengrok is a record that major meritorious retainers of early Joseon Dynasty banded together to swear allegiance to their king and the nation at the north of Daecheonggwan on November 16th, 1404(Taejong 4). It contains the entire text of covenant and the lists of meritorious retainers who attended the event of covenant. (2) Hoemaengmun(會盟文) of Samgongsin-hoemaengrok is a text of covenant that major meritorious retainers did fealty to the king and the nation, and it has some differences in words and phrases compared with Hoemaengmun of The Annual of King Taejong(「太宗實錄」). That is, the former is more detailed than the latter. (3) Only 66 meritorious retainers attended Hoemaengje(會盟祭), the event of covenant, in total 99 of them. Out of 66 meritorious retainers who participated in Hoemaengje, 41 left their signature of attendance and other 25 did not. The other 33 meritorious retainers did not attend Hoemaengje because they already died or lived in exile. (4) There are some differences in the records of meritorious retainer’s name who attended the Hoemaengje between Samgongsin-hoemaengrok and The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, because two materials selected and used various names which differ in words and phrases but refer to same person such as common names, childhood names etc. Otherwise, there might be errors in writing. (5) Hoemaengmun of Samgongsin-hoemaengrok is more detailed than The Annual of King Taejong’s, and the lists of meritorious retainers’ names are also generally accurate. Considering Samgongsin-hoemaengrok is the only material of Hoemaengrok in the reign of King Taejong, it deserves to be designated and preserved as a local cultural asset.
