AB - This paper is intended to study the history of perfect maintenance of the Chronological Annals(實錄) for the Chosun dynasty. After the Japanese invasion(1592), the Annals enshrined in the Historical Deposit Libraries(史庫) in the Local government office must have been moved deep into the mountains. For the protection of these collections, they needed the help of the Buddhist monks. The Bureau of State Records(春秋館) dispatched officials irregularly to keep, enshrine, move, return, consult the Annals when they met a matter of great consequence, change the damaged covers, change the thread of the Annals, change the wooden boxes, and repair the library building. The practice of oiling the paper in order to keep it semi-translucent or moisture-proof goes back at least to 5-6 century in East Asia. But the papers coated with beeswax in Korea were not handed down except the Annals. The purpose of this study is to investigate when and why they coated with beeswax on the Annals published before 1592. For the first step, I analysed the records on maintaining of historical materials, buildings of the Historical Deposit Libraries and the Annals themselves. Consequently I reached the conclusion that the Annals enshrined on Jeonju Historical Deposit Library(全州史庫) were not coated with purified beeswax before 1592. These Annals were coated with purified beeswax in 1699. The reasons are ;Some of the government officials of the Bureau of State Records who compiled the Annals for King Myungjong(明宗實錄) also participated in printing of the Annals in 1606 and compiling the Annals for King Sunjo(宣祖實錄). But they did not coat the Annals with beeswax after 1600. The official who accredited to the Historical Deposit Library in Mt. Jeongjok(鼎足山史庫) had made detailed reports on the books to the King, and probably would have reported on the books coated with beeswax. But records on coating with beeswax have not been found. By contrast the Annals enshrined on Jeonju Historical Deposit Library were repaired on the whole books or small parts in 1644 and 1665. They changed the damaged cover, the thread and the wooden boxes, checked the missed volumes and pages in 1644. The following year they filed and copied the missed volumes and pages. Finally they coated with beeswax on the Annals enshrined in Jeonju Historical Deposit Library especially. The official who carried out this mission was Park Pil-Myung.
