A Study on the Publications of Seowons in Sancheong, Gyeongsangnam-do

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate the publications, either published or assumed to be published by seowons located in Sancheong, Gyeongsangnam-do by the year 1910. Out of the five seowons, two published five books and might have published seven more books. The books confirmed to be published by seowon are as follows: Nammyeong-seonsaeng haggi-yupyeon, Nammyeong-seonsaeng jib(1622), Nammyeong-seonsaeng jib(1671), Nammyeong-seonsaeng munjib(1702), and Nammyeong-seonsaeng munjib(epilogue in 1764) by Deogcheon Seowon. And Suu-dang silgi, Nammyeong-seonsaeng munjib(1799-1897), and Nammyeong- seonsaeng munjib(1824-1897) by Deogcheon Seowon and Deoggye-seonsaeng munjib(1663-early 18c), Saho-seonsaeng munjib, Deoggye-seonsaeng munjib (forword in 1829), and Suo-dang silgi by Seogye Seowon are assumed to have been published respectively. In this research, bibliographical information of these books have been described in detail and it is also confirmed that they were published either certainly or possibly by seowons. An analysis of these twelve books shows the following characteristics:First, nine books are categorized into individual works of the class of Collection of Works, two were categorized into biography of the class of History, and one were categorized into confucianism of the class of Fellow philosophers and scholars. Second, they were all printed with wooden printing blocks. Third, twelve books were published evenly during three centuries from 17th century to 19th century. Forth, they are all directly or indirectly related to the worshipers of related seowon.
