AB - The Buljosamgyeong(佛祖三經) is a book consisting of three sūtras related to both the Buddha and a Buddhist patriarch. The Bulseolsasipyijanggyeong(佛說四十二章經) and Bulyugyogyeong(佛遺敎經) Sūtras are related to the teachings of the Buddha, while the Weisangyeongchaek(潙山警策) Sūtra was written by Weisan (潙山, 771-853) as an admonition to Buddhist priests. All three sūtras focus on instructing Buddhist priests on right attitude and mind. Mongsan(蒙山, 1231-?) played an important role in the introduction of the Buljosamgyeong(佛祖三經) to the Goryeo Dynasty.
This study especially aims to examine the literary sources for the genesis of the Buljosamgyeong(佛祖三經). The analysis of the creation of the Buljosamgyeong (佛祖三經) was done through various ways. This study examines the scripture's origin, based upon previous studies and relevant historical materials. In addition, it explores specific information using various historical sources, related to the background of the origin of the Buljosamgyeong(佛祖三經). What is more, this study clarifies upon the creation of the Bulseolsasipyijanggyeong(佛說四十二章經) by focusing on the relationship of its components. The literary sources for the Buljosamgyeong(佛祖三經) are the first Tripitaka Koreana(初雕大藏經), the annotated editions of Emperor Zhenzong(眞宗, 968-1022) of the Song Dynasty and the Buddhist manuscripts of the Dunhuang(敦煌) region. Through the comparison of the aforementioned scriptures and by examining its background, this study elaborates on the genesis of the Buljosamgyeong(佛祖三經).
