ABSTRACT

To survey how the intelligent in the 18C read a book, the writer studies Hwang Dukgil's reading method and theory by doing research Duksuochajedo(讀書次第圖) which is Hwang, Duckgil's collection showing the reading order and also published in Hareojip(下廬集)written by Hwang, Duckgil, who was the Confucian scholar and New Confucian scholar from the late 18c to the early 19c. Hwang classified the reading order into three steps: “to read in advance, to read intensively, and to skim.” Hwang emphasized the rising importance of Korean New Confucian Books up to the Nine Chinese Classics(四書五經), and placed importance on Korean New Confucian Books as reading materials. Hwang's reading theory can be summed up in propagandism(傳道), review(溫習), and practice(實踐). Hwang considered reading as the only way to pass on Tao(道). He focussed on review which connects what we learn today with what we learned yesterday. He focussed to repeat the sustainable learning process continually as long as we live. In terms of him, the purpose of learning is to practise what we learned to every day's life. When we compare Kyukmongyokyul(擊蒙要訣) with Duksuochajedo(讀書次第圖), Yiyi(李珥) argues that people should read Confucianism book at first, and then New Confucian book, next history book. On the other hand, Hwang divided New Confucian books into two classes: New Confucian Books with the Four Classics of Confucianism, the other New Confucian book with the Five Books of Confucianism. Yiyi focussed on the reader's general attitude toward the New Confucian Book, on the other hand, Hwang provided all types of information, with an emphasis on each New Confucian Book. Hwang's reading theory accommodates a part of Yiyi's theory. However we can look for more progressed aspect in Hwang's theory than Yiyi's.
