AB - This research had covered the esoteric Buddhism book Milgyodaejang vol.9, which has not been revealed to the public yet. As it was the first time being observed thoughtfully, it had been investigated via bibliographical standpoint.
Accentuating on the correlation between the Tripitaka Koreana and Milgyodaejang vol.9 in comparative reviews, following facts were discovered;1. Milgyodaejang vol.9 was composed of 14 woodblocks, similar to shapes of butterfly wings. Each block was arranged in 30 lines and 15 letters per line. The content of the book was written in following order; Buddhist scripture, ordinal letter, the author, Siddham(悉曇) and Chinese transliteration.
2. This book is regarded as a part of Milgyodaejang series that were made of 90 volumes in Goryo Dynasty. According to records, 40 volumes of gold-written type were additionally added to Milgyodaejang series, as total of 130 volumes. However, the additional 40 volumes had not remained to the present.
3. The signature of engraver ‘Backyeodo(白如刀)’ was spotted in page 9 of Milgyodaejang vol.9, but not in Tripitaka Koreana.
4. Milgyodaejang vol.9 covers 141th letter to 150th letter in Tripitaka Koreana which are ‘Rey(賴), Geup(及), Sin(身) and Dae(大).’5. Comparing Siddam alphabets used in Milgyodaejang vol.9 and Tripitaka Koreana, some of the alphabets used in Milgyodaejang vol.9 were not included in Tripitaka Koreana, which implies that Milgyodaejang vol.9 was referenced by other books than Tripitaka Koreana.
6. Chinese alphabets were written in various ways; break-point mark, long or short sound marking, and intonation marking. Same patterns of alphabets were also found in OdaeJinun(五大眞言) written in Chosun dynasty.
7. Taking into account of the publication date of Tripitaka Koreana and records in Ikjaenango (益齋亂藁), the publication date of Milgyodaejang volume 9 is presumably around late 13c to early 14c.
By identifying these following facts through bibliographical examination, the true worthiness of Milgyodaejang vol.9 has been unearthed.
