ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to investigate the background of Daegak-Guksa Ueicheon’s collecting Jejong Gyojang and what influences his idea of teaching and learning had on the publication of Buddhist Scriptures in the Joseon Period. Major findings are as follows:First, in Chapter 2 ‘Background of Collecting Jejong Gyojang’, it is ascertained that ① the primary objective of Ueicheon was to integrate Jejong Gyojang into one integral set by gathering comprehensively various Buddhist scriptures and writings scattered all over the countries in East Asia, based on his idea of internationalism and universalism for Buddhist teaching and learning, and then ② the ultimate objective of his engraving and printing Jejong Gyojang was to compile and distribute the most complete collection of Tripitaka by adding Jejong Gyojang, the supplementary scriptures, to Jinbyeong Daejanggyeong(鎭兵大藏經: First Tripitaka Koreana), the original genuine Tripitaka, and then completing them as one integral set. Second, in Chapter 3, ‘Influence of Publishing Jejong Gyojang’, with a focus on Ueicheon’s idea of teaching and learning about Tripitaka, what influences his ideology had on the publication of Buddhist scriptures in the Joseon Period was discussed from a bibliographical viewpoint. As a result, it was confirmed that in various Korean Buddhist sectoral scriptures such as Hwaeom-gyeong(「華嚴經」), Beopwha-gyeong(「法華經」), Neungeom-gyeong(「楞嚴經」), Daeseung Gisin-ron(「大乘起信論」), Wongak-gyeong(「圓覺經」) and Geumgang-gyeong(「金剛經」), the style of publication was changed to add certain appropriate parts of commentaries to each paragraph of scriptural texts. Such change was ascertained to be what Ueicheon’s idea of teaching and learning about Tripitaka had a tremendous ideological impact on the publication of Korean Buddhist sectoral scriptures in the Joseon Period.
