A Study on ChoHockGaGo by HwangDuckGi

ABSTRACT

HwangDuckGil was a prominent orthodox scholar of the “SungHoSchool” which emerged from the teachings of Lee-Hwang. Later scholars following these teachings include Jung-Gu, Lee-Ick, Ahn-JungBock and Heo-Jeon, HwangDuckGil’s best pupil. HwangDuckGil played a key role as are presentative of “Gyeonggi Nam-In” compiling a collection of books which included twenty of his own works. This article examines ChoHockGaGo in terms of bibliography. ChoHockGaGo is a manuscript among HwangDuckGil works and it was not included in his work, HaReouGip, instead, it was included in his biography, ChoHockPeun. This ChoHockPeun seems to be called ChoHockGaGo It is assumed that HwangDuckGill wrote the book at age 38 during the period when he produced IlWongJipYo. However others contest that is was written when he was age 71 years after he completed “DockSeoChaJaeDo” and “IlSungDo”. ChoHockGaGo is a guide book for academic learners. Its contents includes teachings on a wide range of topics including ethics and morality, system and organisation, animals, arithmetic, weights and measures, weaponry, the Chinese classics.
