ABSTRACT

Dongin-Sihwa was published four times in Korea: first edition (1477), second edition (1639), third edition (revised second edition, 1639~64) and fourth edition (1664). In 1687, Kikuchi-houmei (菊池鵬溟) was published in Japan based on the manuscript from Lee Myoungbin. However the publishers did not obtain the original first edition during the process. Thus the erroneous second edition had both Kim Soo-on and Yang Seong-ji’s prefaces mixed together. Since then, the publisher of the third edition (revised second edition) noticed the mistakes in the second edition and corrected them all. But the fourth edition again contained the previous mistakes as it was based on the second edition. This paper closely investigates the four editions of Dongin-Sihwa, its mistakes, revisions and a clear distinction between the separate editions. It further discusses its spread from Korea to Japan and the main characteristics of the Japan edition. These new facts will help many researchers of this field.
