A Study on the Literature of the Buseok Temple

ABSTRACT

This study is about the history and the change of Buseok Temple that has been the main place of Hwaom in Goryo and Chosun Dynasty. Also we tried to investigate the old-books printed in the temple and related record of the temple in the point of publication and distribution of woodblock printing that means its publication activity. According to the result of this study, we could know the facts as follows ; 8 kinds of books were engraved in the temple, 3 kinds were in Goryo period and 5 kinds were in Chosun period. Buseok temple was one of the leading place in Hwaom of Korean Buddhism, the temple was protected and supported by royal family at that times. Also we could estimate considerable number of books was published in the temple as well. Accumulated technique of woodblock printing in the time of Goryo dynasty was continued to the publishing of Buddhist book in Chosun period, likewise in the category of Confucian books was the same pattern. Besides, the temple has been used to the keeping place of woodblocks which had been engraved in Soonheung governmental office. Eventually the books and related record shows us that Buseok temple has carried out its role in term of knowledge production and distribution within its local community.
