ABSTRACT

This study analyzed the form characteristics of the 17-character editions of Beobhwagyeong (the Sutra of the Lotus, 法華經) published during Goryeo Period and early Joseon Period. There are 23 different Beobhwagyeong editions during the period. Among them, the 17-character editions were the most by 6 editions, 26%. According to the analysis on the form and bibliographical characteristics of the 17-character editions, 2 editions were independently published in Korea while 4 editions were Song (宋) editions, which were the remaking or republishing of the Song (宋) edition. It was possible to suggest a standard to identify the type and line of the editions by analyzing ‘the number of character in a line’ and ‘the head title describing the detail of the edition’ of the 17-character editions published during Goryeo Period and early Joseon Period. It is hoped that the identification standard suggested in this study would be a help for the estimating of published year and classification of editions published during the period.
