AB - Hong’s Dokseorok is Hong Seokju’s annotated catalog in which Hong classified 16,000 books of 472 categories he himself had read into classics, history, philosophy and literature. The publication of this book has something to do with the frequent cultural exchanges between Joseon and Ching. In particular, it is closely related with the publication of the Sago Collections and Comprehensive Bibliography of Sago Collections in Ching. This paper paid attention to this fact in analyzing the classification criteria of the books listed in Hong’s Dokseorok. In this context, this paper studied the classification of books listed in Hong’s Dokseorok and the standards and categories for bibliographic analysis used in Hong’s Dokseorok based on the “Notes on the Use of the Book” of the Comprehensive Bibliography of Sago Collections, considering the temporal relationship of cultural exchanges between Joseon and Ching. Through this study, this paper illuminated the uniqueness of Hong’s Dokseorok by comparing Hong’s classification system with that of Comprehensive Bibliography of Sago Collections and determining what the differences are. In addition, this paper analyzed the temporal relationship between Hong’s two visits to Beijing and the comprehensive compilation projects carried out in Joseon and Ching. This paper also studied the historical possibility of knowledge sharing in terms of bibliographic control that may have been present between Joseon and Ching. The importance of the analysis of book classification and knowledge system of Joseon and Ching based on the “Notes on the Use of the Book” of Comprehensive Bibliography of Sago Collections should be publicized to the global community through the study of Hong’s Dokseorok. At the same time, this paper leaves a challenge for future studies that they should focus on the diversification of research perspectives and analyses for this subject.
