ABSTRACT

This study newly examines the previous understanding on ‘Seongambon’ and ‘Jungjongbon’ the block books of Samguksagi in existence by carrying out close comparative and contrastive analysis with ‘Sungambon’ and ‘gaegakbon in the third year of Taejo during the Joseon Dynasty’. The abridged results are as in the following. Firstly, ‘Sungambon’, pre-existing Goryeobon, is known as ‘Goryeobeongakbon’, but is considered as ‘Goryeojaebeongakbon’ in the study. Secondly, although it has been thought that several pieces of paper in the list of old ‘Jungjongbon’ of Samguksagi and the third paper in the volume 38 were from the remaining wood blocks of ‘Goryeowongakbon’, here it is believed that the former was printed from the left blocks of beongakbon of wongakbon, that is to say ‘Goryeobeongakbon’, and the latter was printed from the block book in the ‘gaegakbon in the third year of Taejo during the Joseon Dynasty’ as ‘Goryeowongakbon’ had been engraved outside in. Thirdly, it has been assumed that the first and second paper of the volume 38 in the existing ‘Jungjongbon’ and the first paper of the volume 39 came from the wood block which was woodcut inside out and then engraved with wongakbon in the third year of Taejo during the Joseon Dynasty. In the study, however, they are considered as the beongak of beongakbon (namely ‘Goryeobeongakbon’) cut outside in and then made again not wongakbon in the third year of Taejo during the Joseon Dynasty.
