ABSTRACT

This case study herein aims to demonstrate strictness and accuracy of the printing culture of the late Joseon period with proofread versions of the letter type created in the Yimjin Year (1772). For the proofread versions of the letter type of Yimjin Year that can be identified to the present days, there are a total of 4 books such as the second version of a book entitled Zhenguan Zhengyao(貞觀政要), the first version of a book entitled Song Li Zhongding gong zou yi xuan(宋李忠定公奏議), and the first and second versions of a book entitled Donglai xian sheng yin zhu Tang jian(東萊先生音註唐鑑). All these books were used as a textbook of the royal lecture “the study to be a good emperor” for kings of the Joseon Dynasty as the books set forth a role model of a good ruler, learning from the past. As the textbooks for the royal lecture was what a king directly perused, required was to consider aesthetic beauty of the original text as well as the accuracy of it. The proofread versions stated in this study is all the proofread versions of the letter type of Yimjin Year created during the period of King Jeong-Jo, which is valued highly in that they serves as the data that can see a part of the printing publication culture achieved during the period of King Jeong-Jo as well as the proofreading process and exquisiteness of typography of the books printed with metal type of the late Joseon period.
