ABSTRACT

This research analyzed the characteristics of the researches & commentaries(章疏) on Cheontae⋅Beophwa included in Gyojang chongnok and the spirit of the times which had motivated Uicheon to collect, organize and publish Jejong Gyojang(Sokjanggyong) in Goryeo Period. Major findings are as follows: First, the researches & commentaries on Cheontae⋅Beophwa included in Gyojang chongnok comprehensively covered all the commentaries related to the basic scriptures, including Trilogy of Cheontae, of Cheontaejong and then formed the theoretical foundation of launching Cheontaejong in Goryeo. Second, the bibliographic description of Gyojang chongnok demonstrates the excellence of its entries. Third, an analysis of the spirit of the times which motivated Uicheon to collect and publish Jejong Gyojang confirms that ① Uicheon collected all researches & commentaries in the Oriental countries in order to publish what is called ‘the fourth Buddhist scripture’ which could follow and succeed to the three main Buddhist scriptures of Tripitaka, ② Uicheon, traveling China for two years from 1085 to 1086, associating with famous Buddhist monks, and collecting all researches & commentaries, had a very strong will to found Cheongtaejong in Goryeo, ③ Since 1091, Uicheon’s spirit of the times still kept his long-cherished wish to save mankind living in the chaotic period by reestablishing and offering Buddhist canons based on the researches & commentaries.
