ABSTRACT

This study aimed at examining parents’ subjectivity structure shown with regard to their book-reading guidance. By depending upon Q methodology, it collected data from October 1 through October 9, 2015. The analyses showed 3 types of subjective structures. The first type of parents conducted active book-reading guidances while focusing on “empathy”, “participation”, and “discussion”. This study named it as “the interaction type”. Parents of this type expected their children to learn thoughts, creativities, problem-solving abilities in the course of their interactions. 31% of total respondents belonged to this type, and they used to recommend such genre books as ‘fictions’ and ‘creative works’ to their children. The second type of parents were passive with regard to their book-reading guidance even though they were concerned with kids’ reading activities as much as the first type. Parents of this type tended to focus on ‘purchasing books’, ‘building reading environment’, and others. 54% of total respondents belonged to this type, and they used to recommend such genre books as ‘histories’ and ‘hero’s memoirs’ to their children. The third type of parents were very restrictive. Sometimes they monitored a wide spectrum of reading activities. They kept their eyes on such activities as ‘book-list keeping’, ‘library using method’, ‘time management’, and others. 15% of total respondents belonged to this type. What made this type different from the other 2 types was that they did not recommend a certain genre of books.
