AB - This paper is an analysis of the bibliography of the Mengshan heshang Sermons abstract. Mengshan was a Buddhist monk during the Song and Yuan Dynasty periods. He significantly influenced Buddhism in the early Joseon Dynasty period. Mengshan’s sermons were passed down in manuscript or print during the late Goryeo Dynasty era. In 1467, HyegakJonja Sinmi first compiled the Mengshan heshang Sermons abstract and translated it into Korean. This book consists of Mengshan’s and Naong’s sermons. Naong’s disciples also contributed to the publishing this book. Together, they combined the Mengshan heshang Sermons abstract with the Four Buddhist Sermons, Chobalsimjagyeongmun and Naong’s sermons. This shows that Mengshan’s ideas gained popularity during this time. There are 39 known editions of this work in existence. Eleven of those are Korean translation, the others are all written in Chinese. In the Korean editions, Naong’s sermon forms the last part of the book. However, in the Chinese editions, Naong’s sermon precedes the Mengshan heshang Sermons abstract. This is an important distinction between Korean translations and the Chinese versions. All known editions were published during the time period between the 15th and 17th century. And about the half of editions were published in the Mt. Jiri area. Another of Mengshan’s book, Six Teachings of Monk Mengshan, was also published during the same tim in the same area. This strongly indicates that Mengshan’s ideas were popular in the Mt. Jiri area during these times.
