ABSTRACT

This study is to academically verify the interpretation errors and contradictions of the forgery claim of Zeungdogaja owned by Cheongju Early Printing Museum. The claim was mentioned in the “A study of forensic scientific analysis on metal print type” by National Forensic Service and Hwang Jung ha, head of arts and science department of Cheongju Early Printing Museum. The presentation materials made misinterpretation and misjudgement due to the lack of knowledge and information regarding metal type-casting, conservation science of cultural properties, the science of bibliography. Firstly, compositional aspects of metal ingredients and print type, and the issue on injection of foreign substances are derived from the lack of understanding on corrosion of bronze, and lack of fundamental knowledge about iron casting method. Vague assumptions were made without the experiments and analysis on metal ingredients. Secondly, the claim that there is inconsistency in the shape of the characters is the consequence of not comparing the images properly on the part of National Forensic Service. Besides, the print type created by the 3 dimensional print does not represent the characters’ strokes exactly due to the crumpling of the ink. Because of the unsuitable raw materials, it does not verify the conformity degree accurately. Thirdly, An error was found when NFS claimed that the high degree of straight figure of the target print type is the evidence of its forgery. An error occurred when NFS mistakenly assumed that the specific print type with low degree of straight figure is Print Type of Goryo while the print type found in Gaesung in November, 2015 has a high degree of straight figure and the same is true for many Chosun Dynasty print types. It intentionally introduced print type with low degree of straight figure and distorted the fundamental nature of print type. Fourthly, the residual China ink is claimed to be an artificially attached one. However, It does not take into consideration factors such as those deriving from excavated conditions of this type or the process of being handed down.
