A Study on the Strategies Needed for Exporting Korean Publications Abroad

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to explore the strategies needed for exporting Korean books to foreign markets. The current status and features of Korean books exported to foreign countries are as followings. First, the share of exporting books was very low. The absolute majority were published for the domestic market. Second, the target of exporting books was mainly focused on the markets of Far East Asian countries including China. Only a marginal share was exported to Western countries such as America, European nations, and others. Third, a very narrow spectrum of genres like cartoon, children’s book, and literature were aiming at foreign markets, Most of publishers did not take foreign markets as their target when they were printing books regarding management, economics, and other classical readings. Fourth, Chinese readers liked books in a narrow range of genres such as children’s books, educational cartoons, essays, pragmatic books, and self-education. Last but not the least, the books well designed and having excellent contents, without exception, led the way in their export. These findings suggest that in order to make a success in foreign markets, we have to break the current predicament. More than anything else, we need to secure qualified translators, establish collaborating work-systems, diversify content materials, take advantage of Han-ryoo, analyze target groups (readers’ needs, ad-marketings, trend changes, etc.) and share the information networks.
