ABSTRACT

This paper focuses on the transformations of Bei Song zhizhuan (Account of the Northern Song) underwent during the late Chosǒn. This text is repeatedly cited in late Chosǒn records and lists from the seventeenth century. After transmission into the Chosǒn, this work was translated from vernacular Chinese to vernacular Korean; in this process it was converted from printed texts to handwritten copies. The Toyo bunko copy, a vernacular Korean copy from a book-lending shop, was the form available to late Chosǒn readers. This paper will show that the structure of Bei Song zhizhuan was changed to reflect the structure of the indigenous literary works circulated in transcribed copies; moreover, its content received certain adaptations that reflected the norms accepted in vernacular Korean fiction, those familiar to both compilers and readers. As a result, the distinctions between foreign and domestic literary works became minimal.
