ABSTRACT

In this paper, ‘JiaoZang(敎藏)’ refers to Monk Daegak’s ‘ZhuZongJiaoZang(諸宗敎藏)’ during the Goryeo period. This study is targeted to investigate titles in JiaoZang. Since it contains a total of 1,010 writings, it is irrational and not possible to review all titles in brief reports. Therefore, this study decided to examine Great Monk ZhiZhe(智者)’s writings only. The study results found the followings: 1) Reasons why JiaoZang is separately classified; Strictly speaking, according to the Buddhist taxonomy, JiaoZang belongs to LunZang (Abhidhamma Pitaka). However, it greatly differs from LunZang in India in terms of the literature form or description method. In this sense, it had been needed to classify JiaoZang separately. 2) Origin of title; According to review on titles, they are close to Chinese tradition, not to Indian tradition. In other words, they are closely related with the history of Chinese commentaries. This pattern is found in the method of description, as well as in titles because it appears that Chinese intellectuals were the readers at that time. 3) Covering the south and north; This is not the characteristics of JiaoZang, but it is found in Great Monk ZhiZhe’s writings. Great Monk ZhiZhe is a figure who lived from the Southern and Northern Dynasties to the reunification under the Sui Dynasty. Therefore, his writings reveal an intention of unification, covering both southern and northern dynasties.
