A Comparative Analysis and Textual Compare of the Sinpyeon jejong gyojang chongnok

ABSTRACT

The oldest remaining edition of Sinpyeon jejong gyojang chongnok is the manuscript version transcribed in the Angen era (安元 2年, 1176). In an effort to set forth the standard text of Sinpyeon jejong gyojang chongnok based on the Angen-manuscript(安元寫本), this study aims to perform comparative analysis and textual compare of the former with four other editions: the Shōhō-manuscript version (正保寫本, 1645), the Genroku edition (元祿刊本, 1693), the Taishō Shinshū Daizōkyō version (大正新修大藏經本, 1928), and the Hanguk bulgyo jeonseo version (韓國佛敎全書本, 1979). Major findings are as follow. The Angen-manuscript is currently preserved at Kosan-ji in Kyoto. Baed on the transcription record attached at the end of the fascicle, it was transcribed by Meiku(明空) in the 2nd year of the Angen era(1176). However, considering the fact that writing style of the latter part of the third fascicle, i.e. after the entry of Shunzhengli lun, quite differs from that of the other parts, it is possible to presume an additional transcriber. Many cases of proofreading, including correction of typos, addition of omitted letters, and other various uses of proofreading marks, are found across whole parts of the manuscript ; and total 121 cases are listed in this study. The Shōhō-manuscript is a re-transcribed version based on the Angen-manuscript, and it was transcribed by Eben(永辨) in the 2nd year of the Shōhō era(1645). The Shōhō-manuscript applied proofreading marks seen in the Angen-manuscript, and also added its own version of proofreading notes that include marks for illegibility, correction of typos, and marks for trans-location of letters or titles, etc. For comparative analysis in this study, I carried out word-for-word compare of the Angen-manuscript with four other editions ; represented differences of the text, and mistakes and omissions of letters or words ; and provided critical annotation for over ninety cases of noticeable disparity between compared editions of Sinpyeon jejong gyojang chongnok.
