ABSTRACT

This research is a bibliographic analysis of ‘Musim’ presented in the Article ‘Hwangbyogheeun’ of Jikji (the First Volume). For this research, the sources of 15 items of Buddhistic terms from ‘Hwangbyogheeun’ are categorized into three themes of ‘①‘Ilsim(Mind)’, ②‘Musim(The mental state of freeing from the worldly desires)’, ③‘Jikha Musim(Leaving at once the worldly desires)’ and the content of each Buddhistic term is analyzed. Findings are as follows: First, in Chapter 2 ‘Ilsim’, it is found that Hwangbyogheeun’s claim that the common people’s mind itself is Buddha, and then it is important to leave immediately the worldly desires was clearly stated. Second, in Chapter 3 ‘Musim’, it is found that Hwangbyogheeun’s answers to various questions over ‘the mental state of freeing from the worldly desires’ are presented in detail, including the message ‘Musim is to act on the truth.’ Third, in Chapter 4 ‘Jikha Musim’, it is confirmed that by realizing that ‘the mind itself is the Buddhist canon’, people can reach the state of ‘leaving the worldly desires at once’, and it is a perfect awakening. Therefore, it is found that the idea of ‘Munyeom․Musim’ conceived by Yukjo Hyeneung in the late 7th century was specifically presented by Hwangbyogheeun as the concrete method of reaching the state of Musim, and then came to fruition in the early 9th century.
