ABSTRACT

Situated at the intersection between literary and philological studies, this paper focuses on Joseon Dynasty Era chap’yŏn munjip, a form of anthology compiled by the author himself. In past research, I suggested the tendency of Chosŏn writers to collect their life’s works in a single volume beginning in the seventeenth century. Through an analysis of chap’yŏn munjip uncovered in the Kyujunggak Archives, this paper provides empirical verification for this claim. The results of the investigation can be summarized as follows. First, from a methodological standpoint, an anthology can be determined to be a chap’yŏn munjip by examining the introduction and personal seal of the author. Second, utilizing this method of verification, sixty-seven chap’yŏn munjip were investigated in the Kyujunggak Archives. Third, in principle, chap’yŏn munjip were handwritten transcriptions. On the surface, this practice was related to the firm conventions involved in the publication of a deceased author’s work. On the other hand, it reveals how authors actually purposefully prepared their own anthologies while still living, contrary to the custom of publishing an anthology only after the author had deceased. Fourth, the manner in which chap’yŏn munjip are organized can vary. The closer it is to a drafted manuscript, the more it adheres to a chronological order. There are also those that are amalgamations of smaller collected works, organized by period. Fifth, the timing of chap’yŏn munjip publication was related to a “turning point” within the author’s life. In terms of the overarching dynamics of publication culture, the timing of chap’yŏn munjip publication was related to the increasing publication of anthologies in the late Chosŏn Dynasty era. In contrast with the view in existing research that chap’yŏn munjip were popular only in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, by tracing the period in which chap’yŏn munjip authors existed, this paper finds that chap’yŏn munjip were prevalent into the twentieth century.
