ABSTRACT

Since Iljung Kim, Chunghyeon worked for a long time and contributed to the history of Korean calligraphy very much, it is not easy to summarize and introduce all of his contributions. However, in order to deliver his contributions to the younger scholars clearly, I decided to show his representative contributions in four aspects as I think that they should be explained thoroughly. Providing calligraphy by creating a calligraphy textbook, expanding the area of Korean language by creating old-style writing and developing own Chinese character writing and Korean calligraphy are already well-known facts in the calligraphy area. In this thesis, I add the meaning of publishing Geunyeokseobo, which is a theoretical contribution of Iljung. The thing that has been newly found in this study is that Iljung’s calligraphy was influenced by the family study which handed down for generations. Emulating the spirits of his great-grandfather Kim, Seokjin and grandfather Kim, Yeonghan who resisted to the Japanese annexation of Korea, he reflected the comprehensive literary consciousness in calligraphy, poetry, epigraphy, seal engraving etc. I have realized that I cannot discuss the essence of the calligraphy of Iljung without understanding the history of Iljung’s family. Ohyeon where Iljung lived is the place that the spirit of Korean was kept strongly even under the Japanese colonial period. In Ohyeon, 4 generations got together and created a large family. Even though they were poor, they maintained the traditional customs and lived sincerely. The history of Ohyeon proves that patriotism can be kept by culture, not only by guns and swords. The study on the calligraphy of Iljung is not a simple study of personal history; it is a study of the spirit of Koreans. That is the most valuable lesson in this study.
