Study on Siebold Version (『類合 LUIHŎ』) of the Yuhap

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to widely introduce Siebold version of the Yuhap(類合 LUIHŎ), one of the Saegim(새김) materials of the modern Korean literature. Another purpose is to examine several features such as bibliographical forms and writings and spellings appearing in this literature. This Siebold version of the Yuhap was published by Philipp Franz von Siebold(1796- 1866) in Leiden, the Netherlands in 1838. This literature is now owned by the National Institute of Korean Language (NIKL), the University of Leiden, etc. The NIKL version is a hard covered book, 29.65cm in width and 37.35 cm in height. That book has total 42 pages. Some part of its papers is slightly oxidized and it has a little bit of water beneath, but is preserved in good condition overall. It was obtained by Benjamin Smith Lyman(1835-1920) on November 29, 1874 in Tokyo, Japan. After the death of him, the book was donated to the Northampton Forbes Library in Massachusetts, USA by his heir. Now it is in the possession of the NIKL. This literature is consisted of ‘inside title + slip sheet (2 pages) + transcription of Yuhap (10 pages, 1512 characters) + slip sheet (2 pages) + appendix [8 pages, 455 words (words or phrases), references + A. Sijo (traditional three-verse Korean poem) + B. Sino-Korean poem 1 (天地之間海爲大……) C. Sino-Korean poem 2 (三國旣會此房中……)] and a German translation of Yuhap (LUIHŎ) (10 pages)’. The German translation part is printed in a letterpress printing. Parts of the transcription of Yuhap and the appendix are printed in lithography. It is because that parts of the transcription of Yuhap and the appendix include Korean letters, Chinese characters, and Kanas. This literature is transcribed by Ko Tsching Dschang who is Siebold's Chinese secretary. There are many errors and misspellings in it. It is significant that some errors seem to be copied as they are in the model version. It can be inferred that Siebold version and Yadong version are cognate species, because they are consistent with each other in misspellings and the font of Chinese characters particularly. The Siebold's version is consisted of 1512 characters (16 letters per line, 10 lines per page). Unlike the other Joseon versions, it is on the right and left side of the Chinese character that Korean letters are placed. It is worth noting that the 『類合 LUIHŎ』 version, published by Siebold in 1838, is significant as it reveals the reality of “Yuhap”, a book that was published in the 1852 edition of NIPPON. It has also great value for being the first book of Korea translated in German language in Europe.
