ABSTRACT

(1) Material for printing wax and processing method: Non-drying oil or semidrying oil and 65∼75% wax were most effective. Mashing was necessary in order to create flexibility and stickiness. (2) Printing suitability of chinese ink: Water chinese ink was not suitable, but oil ink was suitable for metal type printing. (3) Content and proportion of chinese ink: The most effective combination was 5∼10% soot carbon, 5% solvent and functional additives with 5∼10% grain paste or glue. (4) Application technique of chinese ink: The application technique on printing plate was the key factor determining the quality of printed material. (5) Characteristic of brushed page: The overall style and trait of individual character was very similar to that of Jikji. Consequently, it is concluded that the typesetting and brushing techniques of metal types used for printing Jikji in Korea dynasty were within this range.
