AB - The Gyojang compiled by the monk Uicheon (1055-1101) were established by the collection of Buddhist scriptures from East Asia. This paper reviewed the circumstances surrounding the establishment of the Gyojang.
The background of the establishment of the Gyojang is first to control Buddism Scriptures and Commentaries which is related to the centralization of power by arranging them systematically, second to interpret them according to the political and social purpose, as well as to bloom Dharma's talk.
Uicheon’s commentary collection began in the Mun-jong 27 (1073) and was completed with the compilation of the Sinpyeonjejong-gyojangchongnok in the Seon-jong 7 (1090). The existing commentaries of the Gyojang are grasped in all 50 kinds including the huayanjīng-suíshūyǎnyìchāo of Todaiji, 45 kinds of a reprint and repair books.
The history of the Gyojang is divided into analysis of the usage of the Gyojang and the contents of the Gyojang. It was examined through the formation and development of ‘the book written by the Sage and the Saints in the East’ applied as a classification standard to the Chinese Tripitaka. Tripitaka Koreana unlike the Chinese did not include the commentary. It was divided into two parts of the ‘Gyojang’ and ‘Tripitaka’ in the Goryo period.
