ABSTRACT

This study investigated the titles in Tiantai-related literature and performed an experimental review on the titles in Huaen Sect. In fact, Huaen Sect-related books written during Tang and Song dynasties are huge. There already are a lot of books which cover YiTian. Therefore, this study examined the titles of HuaYan III, which are found in JiaoZangZongLu only. At that time, most Buddhist priests engaged in Buddhist jiangjing (lecture meeting), unlike current writing. The jiangjing-related contents were read by disciples and reviewed by the Buddhist priest. If not, they were often internally reviewed and published. They were also distributed according to the transcription style. Hence, title mismatch and content in/out took place. Considering these findings, the study results found the followings: First, the Tang period was under the influence of a general exegetical trend. Here, the general exegetical trend refers to the exegetical approach of Confucian scripture. At that time, therefore, ‘Shu’ was very common as a Buddhist commentary, so was the title of HuaYan III. Second, there was competition with the existing Tiantai Sect. Tiantai Sect has very broad interpretation approach on doctrine and zhi guan. In other words, it combines theory and religious implementation very well. Since the Tiantai Studies was somewhat theory-oriented, ironically, it released a wide variety of books on zhi guan, and they were reflected on the titles. Third, they were written in a manner which promotes approach and interaction with followers. This kind of intention is found in the titles as well, as the summary of the doctrines of Tiantai such as Q&As and lighting.
