AB - This research deals with Buddhist scriptures which are published at Temple YongJang, Tae-In in Jeolla province in late Joseon dynasty of 1635. In those days, eleven series of the Buddhist scriptures had been published for three consecutive years at Temple YongJang. Mostly, those are prerequisite teaching textbooks for educating Buddhist monks at Temple and books of ritual which is necessary for performing Buddhist ceremony. Such a huge Buddhist scriptures publishing stuff had been done based on the great aspiration of Soyo Taeneung(逍遙太能)―the best disciple of Seosan(西山) and Byeogam Gakseong(碧巖覺性) who leaded the rebuilding temples after Japanese Invasion in 1592. Over 500 supporters including Choegyejjang(崔繼長), Shinbok(申福) participated in publishing books and covered the needed cost. Also, it is determined that twelve engravers, including Inhwa(印和) who are with many engraving experiences from several temples had participated in the actual process of publishing the Buddhist scripture with painter Gyehak(戒學) as central figure, and it had taken approximately fourteen months to complete. In conclusion, publishing the Buddhist scriptures was progressed in order to supplement some parts of the Buddhist scriptures which were disappeared after Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. Thus, the intention was to distribute teaching materials and ritual of Buddhist scriptures which showed no historical evidence regarding publication by neighboring temples at that time.
