ABSTRACT

The act of storing Buddhist objects inside the statue of Buddha is secretly and strictly done based on the scriptures of building statues Josanggyeong(造像經). Buddhist scriptures stored as treasures of Buddhist canon are decided by the preferences and sects of monks who guard the particular temple. Therefore those Buddhist scriptures stored inside could document the history and identity of a temple without its own historical records. In this research, it is attempted to figure out the historical identity of Girimsa Temple by analyzing the content of Buddhist scriptures stored inside the plastic statue of Buddha in Girimsa Temple. A bibliographical analysis of ‘54 titles, 71 volumes’ of Goryeo and Joseon wood block prints found inside the plastic statue of Buddha in Girimsa Temple shows the following results. ① It is very possible that in Goryeo period there were settled the monks of Tiantai Buddhism, valuing the prints of the scriptures of the Avatamska Sutra, the Sutra of Lotus, and the Zen Buddhism, and strictly following their doctrines in Goryeo period. ② In the early Joseon period till the 16th century, the descendents of Zen Buddhism who intensively stressed the scriptures of the Sutra of Lotus and the Zen Buddhism guarded in Girimsa Temple.
