AB - (1) The Koya edition refers to 56 editions printed in wooden types by Raikei and others in several temples in the area of Koya mountain for about 40 years between 1604 and 1645. Its main characteristics are double-sided printing, types with phonetic alphabet attached, and paper pressed with sprinkled mica.
(2) The material for the type was wood. The type-making technique imitates script writing style to some extent, yet its quality is not sophisticated enough and barely middle-middle grade.
(3) The typesetting technique shows somewhat unevenly aligned vertical and lateral stripes of character trace. There are some skewed characters and the tone of ink color is not very consistent. The edition frame has no edge in general, and when there are edges, they are somewhat splayed apart. Some of the corrections are not precise. The technical quality is middle-middle grade.
(4) The brushing technique shows some inconsistency, with substantial variance in ink color thickness, frequent spreads of chinese ink and intermittent double printing. The technical quality is barely middle-middle grade.
(5) The type printing quality is barely middle-middle grade.
