ABSTRACT

Bryn Mawr College that located in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has Korean rare books 42 titles and 84 volumes. Bryn Mawr College’s entire Korean book collection was the gift of Helen Burwell Chapin (1892-1950), a graduate of Bryn Mawr and an Asian art historian who gave the collection to the college shortly before her death. During 1926-1927 she lived in Japan and traveled to Korea for the first time. Then she spend the years 1929-1932 in China, Japan and Korea. She made two trips to Korea during the fellowship. The first was in August and September 1929, then she returned to Korea again in September 1930. Since then, Chapin came to Korea as an Asiatic Arts and Monuments Specialist for the US army military government from 1946 to 1948. Chapin donated to Bryn Mawr her collection of Korean books, along with many other Asian books, scrolls, and other artifacts, shortly before her death in 1950. Examining the Korean collection by subjects, there are 6 titles and 7 books of Classics, 11 titles and 28 books of History, 18 titles and 42 books of Sciences and Arts, 7 titles and 7 books of Literature.
