ABSTRACT

Although there are a lot of studies on Chihsinlun thought of Weonhyo, there are very few articles approached from a philological point of view. In this paper, in order to understand his thought of Chishinrun, first of all, I examine three literatures, “So(疏)”, “Byeolgi(別記)” and “Hwebon(會本),” from the philological method, and as a result I would like to emphasize that there is a need to make a critical edition. “Byeolgi” has been used in Japan since the Nara period, but the current edition is based on a printed book of the Edo period. However, in order to accurately understand “Byeolgi”, the existence of “Byeolgi” in Kanazawa Bunko (金沢文庫) is important. The current edition of “So” is also based on a printed book of the Edo period, but it is important to confirm the errors of the current edition through a fragment of “So” in Haeinsa temple. From these points, both texts should be edited critically in the future. In addition, it is pointed out that “Hwebon” includes only a part of “Byeolgi”, and that the text was revised without any notices with reference to the printed book published in 1781. Therefore, the previous researches based on the translation of “Hwebon” have problems. Finally, it is also an important result that a long sentence of his work on Chihsinlun was newly found by reexamining the quotation of “So” in Japanese literature. It is quoted as “So”, but in fact it cannot be found in the current version.
