ABSTRACT

The 20 Bangyakhappyon woodblocks were examined, 15 of which were published in Hanyang(Gyeongseong) and 5 of which were published in Jeonju. Most of these editions have undergone some modifications to reuse existing printing plates or simply to change the copyright. The tradition of the editions was widely distributed in the two branches of Jungjeoeng-Bangyakhappyon published in Yadong and Jeungmaek-Bangyakhappyon published in Midong, and the Sinjeoeng-Bangyakhappyon published in Seogye-Seopo has the character of synthesizing the two editions. Prior to the Japanese colonial period, Bangyakhappyon’s major plateological achievements had already been made, and later Jeonju’s publications had a great impact on Jeungmaek-Bangyakhappyon’s nationwide popularity. Bangyakhappyon’s woodblock was still in the 1910s, but was soon replaced by a new lead type.
