ABSTRACT

This study put a focus on the proofreading of poems published within the newly found Mu-sin letter-style myeong gi pyeon nyeon (明紀編年) in order to study the proofreading practices for metal type printing in the late Joseon Dynasty based on the existing researches. myeong gi pyeon nyeon a Chinese history book that summarizes the ups and downs of the Ming Dynasty, began to be taught in the reign of Yeongjo of the Joseon period and was published multiple times for elementary students. This study looked into the first version of myeong gi pyeon nyeon which consists of 12 fascicles and 6 volumes in perfect condition. The marking and contents of proofreading in the proofread version seem similar to the proofread version of other metal type printings in the late Joseon period. Right- or left-leaning letters(5,517 times, 43.1%) and blurred letters(4,540 times, 35.4%) were most frequently pointed out, which are attributable to the irregular shapes of types. It makes up 78.5% of total number of proofreading. It means the regularization of type standard can save printing time. In fact, Jeongnija types were casted to fix the problem during the reign of Jeongjo of Joseon. This study aims to estimate the common practices of metal type setting and proofreading in the late Joseon period by analyzing the proofreading method and the frequency of each correction type based on myeong gi pyeon nyeon, and supplementing with the examples of other proofread publications. In the process, the exquisite quality of proofreading and elaborate efforts for metal type printing in the late Joseon period have been demonstrated.
